FINALLY, WORK COMMENCES ON SECOND HOSPITAL ACCESS

Road works have commenced today on a second access road to ease traffic congestion and ease safety concerns regarding ambulance travel and emergency patient exiting of campus. The road which connects Phil Hawthorne Drive to the Campus is already used daily by approximately 200 hospital staff and ambulance vehicles. It is also a major spectator amenity for the adjacent Go-Cart complex. Council statistics will of course confirm these numbers.

Initial marking of potholes with pink paint ready for filling. Users already say the road is safer as potholes are easily visible.

A large pothole adjacent to the extensive signage identifying the road as a major emergency vehicle access.

Note the grader in the Go-Cart facility only 50 metres away ready for imminent work on the second access.

University of NSW School of Rural Health Campus Coffs Harbour - Serious Potential OH&S Breaches

(An urgent email to OH&S manager Uni of NSW Sydney)

Dear Mr Janssen

I am a resident of Coffs Harbour and have had several occasions recently to watch your students at work within our hospital campus proper.

Could I draw to your attention a longstanding issue which goes to the safety of all those who use the Hospital precinct including your students.

I have included a link below detailing the raising of the issue by our local member in State Parliament.

This highlights the gravity of the problem but also reveals its longevity and the inability of parties to resolve same.

In short there arise myriad of potential safety issues due to the fact that the facility has only one entry/exit point.

Further, that entry/exit point is via the extremely busy and dangerous Pacific Highway.

I am fearful that UNSW may be unwittingly failing in its duty of care to its students at this campus.

I have copied several relevant parties to this email as a matter of courtesy and to expedite a speedy resolution to this issue.

THE BALL IS NOW DEFINITELY ROLLING - GO YOU GOOD THING!!

Thanks for getting on board Keith,
As I intimated to Nan below, this is a low impact 'get the ball rolling'
strategy which will achieve immediate results as follows:
- grade and gravel the 20 metres from the Go-Cart track to the hospital rear
entry (between the Mental Health Unit & Shearwater Lodge) - I note
ambulances are currently using the track I describe in extreme cases.
- this will immediately create 6 benefits
1. A second hospital exit
2. A second hospital entry
3. Alleviate traffic flows on & off the highway - this would reduce
ambulance response times
4. Eliminate the need for a costly northern entry road & bridge via Cook
Drive
5. Bring into play immediately the existing parking spaces at the hockey &
stadium grounds
6. Allow for segregation of long-stay (staff) & short-stay (patient visitors
& ED users) parking.

Beyond this initial fix, which is a reasonable long-term blueprint in its
own right, can I throw this 'embryo' out there:
There is potential for a Healthcare, University, Sporting and Entertainment
Centre Precinct across this collective space.
Sharing of resources being the key to solving this current issue and
enhancing and creating new potentially profitable enterprise.

Yes it has been neglected by governments of both sides for years. What
concerns me is talk of this community and council providing more of our
community land at no cost to government. This is cost shifting at its best.
Look at what this community/councils and service clubs have provided to the
government at no cost to date at this facility. It's a great facility but
government needs to front up with the money to fix the parking issue.
